Window Sills - « back to F.A.Q.s

Summary

Window sills are an integral part of any envelope system. The sills wash (the wash is the slope) directs water away from the window and exterior wall. A drip edge is incorporated into a sill to further direct water from the building.

The widow sills on our building have some cracks but otherwise look ok, should this be a concern?

Water can penetrate even the smallest cracks. Once water finds an avenue to travel it starts to take material with it. Let’s look at how water moves.

Water enters though a crack in the window sill. The water runs down though the cores of the block. The water continues running till it reaches the floor pan. Now the water runs along the floor pan till it finds away into the bond beam. Water is the destroyer of buildings.

It has been suggested to us that we could save the expense of replacing the sills and simply flash over the existing sills, is this idea good?

It has been Renew Masonry’s experience that water gets trapped between the sill and cladding, thus the sill is perpetually wet. The deterioration continues unseen and unabated. Lastly, with flashing the opportunity to incorporate a redundant or back up system is lost.

Our building has many odd sized windows, are there sills available for our windows?

Yes, Renew Masonry casts its own sills, designed to fit your windows. Our sills are available to any Masonry company. But consider this; when Renew Masonry installs new sills a redundant system is always incorporated.
