Parapets - « back to F.A.Q.s

Summary

A parapet is to you’re building, what an umbrella is to you’re rain gear. If you wear rubber boots you’re feet stay dry, but you’re head? The parapet is a key point to a good envelope system. A failed parapet will allow water to penetrate the most vulnerable point of the envelope. Water runs down hill, and a failed parapet will leave the entire building vulnerable.

Our Building has a four inch cap flashing, is this not more then enough to protect our roof system?

No. Let us explain how this system fails. When a roof parapet is built, a nailing plate is anchored to the top of the parapet. A nailing plate is at least one and half inches tall, this leaves only two and a half inches of flashing to protect the roof system. Wind driven rain travels four to six inches up a wall. Once water enters a roof system the entire building is in jeopardy.
